Bjorn

Bjorn means bear — but by a crooked road, and the road is the interesting part. It is not the word for bear: it is the nickname given to the bear once the true word could no longer be said. Where the name Bjorn comes from
From Old Norse bjǫrn, which means, literally, the brown one. Understanding why a people would call the bear «the brown one» is understanding the strangest and best thing about this name.
There was an Indo-European word for bear. It existed, and it survived in the south of Europe: it became ursus in Latin and árktos in Greek, and it is still here in Arctic — which means, literally, the land under the bear's constellation.
In the north, that word disappeared. Not by accident: Germanic and Slavic hunters stopped saying it on purpose. The belief was simple and frightening — to say the bear's true name was to be heard by it. To call it by its name was to call it.
So they replaced the name with a way around it. They said the brown one, and that is what remains. English bear and Norse björn both descend from that evasion. The original word never came back.

There are four consonants to one vowel — the reverse of most names, and the exact reverse of a name like Alice. The o is all the opening this name has, and it is held between two walls: bj on one side, rn on the other.
It begins on B, which is closing the lips completely before any sound is allowed out. And it ends on N, which sends the air through the nose rather than releasing it through the mouth. The name does not end open. It ends diverted.
The bj at the front is the part most mouths outside the north cannot manage. English speakers usually drop the j altogether and say byorn or simply born. The name resists being said, which suits the animal it names.
